Summary

The Home Office is here to make the UK safer. Border Force is a Law Enforcement arm of the Home Office with primary responsibility for UK Border Security, including counter terrorism, immigration and customs matters.

We are responsible for handling the UK border control by implementing immigration and customs regulations and working with the wider Home Office on counter terrorism, organised crime, modern slavery and trafficking. Border Force has five operational regions in the UK: North, Central, Heathrow, South and South East & Europe. These regions have responsibility for securing the border 24 hours a day, 365 days a year at the UK’s 140 seaports, airports, 200+ general aviation ports, postal depots and international rail network. This includes the Eurostar from Brussels and Paris to St Pancras International and the Eurotunnel from Coquelles to Cheriton, where Border Force has juxtaposed controls.

Job description

We are looking for two apprentices to join the Border Force Risk Identification Team which is part of the Operational Assurance Directorate. But why join Border Force?

The apprenticeship will take up to 18 months to complete, but you will be appointed, from the outset, on a permanent contract at AO grade.

So what do we do?

The Border Force Operational Assurance Directorate (OAD) is responsible for the Border Force Insider Threat Programme, which was built to reduce the threat of insider activity within Border Force. The Programme aims to deliver this by detecting and preventing those who seek to exploit their position, or access to an organisation's assets, for unauthorised purposes. The Programme brings together key partners to provide a joined-up response and ensures that Border Force's key values are upheld.

The Risk Identification Team (RIT) is a key part of the Programme, it comprises of the People Protection and Risk Team (PPRT) and the Joint Anti- Corruption Intelligence Team (JACIT). The RIT's main functions are to tackle corruption at the border whilst seeking to identify any risks or vulnerabilities that may lead to the compromise of staff. The team makes appropriate interventions to Lessen the Likelihood of staff being compromised or risks intensifying to a full-blown insider act. The RIT works closely with other government departments to ensure staff are protected against the risk of insider threat.

OAD are recruiting an Administrative Officer to join the Risk Identification Team (RIT). They will be posted within the PPRT, based in Croydon or within the JACIT, who work jointly with the National Crime Agency. The post may have occasional travel to visit Border Force staff at ports.

This is an exciting and challenging opportunity to join a new and evolving team as part of the Insider Threat Programme of work. If your application is successful you will support the development of Anti¬-Corruption intelligence and assist in the identification and assessment of threats and risks to Border Force.

The successful candidate will be required to wear a uniform on visits and other specified occasions.


Duties

Responsibilities

  • Filing, data management, copying and general office administrative duties.
  • Inputting data from a wide range of sources both internally within Border Force, from partner Law enforcement agencies as with external stakeholders.
  • Creating, maintaining and updating accurate case management records and team databases and spreadsheets.
  • Comparing data sets and deciding its relevance.
  • Liaising with BF staff, candidates and partners to handle queries, managing the team in box ensuring all queries are distributed to the appropriate person within the team.
  • Inputting financial requisitions including use of the in-house financial system supporting progression of cases within PPRT or JACIT.

The successful candidate may be required to carry out other duties within the scope of the grade and within the limits of their skill, competence and training.

The role on the Risk identification Team is varied and represents an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of a new team, gaining exposure and insight into corruption and insider threat, how it can be tackled and, equally importantly, how staff can be protected.

Essential criteria

Essential Criteria

  • A working knowledge of the Microsoft suite of software packages (Word, Excel and Outlook).
  • Experience of working to a high level of accuracy when data inputting numerical and categorical data.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and attention to detail.

Desirable criteria

  • Ability to analyse different sources of data.
  • Ability to follow policies and guidance.
  • Relevant skills and experience gained from security, regulatory or investigatory work (e.g. Border Force, immigration casework, revenue compliance and fraud investigation, although this list is not exhaustive).
  • Ability to deal with large volumes of data within short time frames. Qualifications You must have GCSE, or equivalent, Grade C or above in maths and English or are willing to complete level 2 maths and English functional skills by the end of the apprenticeship.

Please note that we will also accept equivalent qualifications at the same level achieved from a wide range of formal academic and vocational training providers as determined by Ofqual, including for example, qualifications acquired in Scotland or some BTEC and higher level NVQs. You must have already been awarded the qualification(s) and must be able to provide your certificate(s) at interview.
