Description

This position offers a fantastic opportunity to develop the qualities and skills to become a qualified Installation Electrician in the Construction industry whilst working for a leading Building Services contractor. This is a great alternative to full-time Higher Education where the successful candidate will work as a Trainee Electrician, obtaining hands-on experience from day one.

To be considered you must be motivated, practical, good with tools and have the ability to relate positively to different people and expectations. You also need to have an understanding of the level of commitment required from you to successfully manage working in a full time role alongside furthering your education.

Duties

Trainee Electricians support the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical systems in industrial, commercial and domestic environments. Electricians work in both indoor and outdoor settings. Electrical equipment and systems may include switchboards, motors, cables, fuses, thermal relays, fault current protection switches, heating, lighting, air conditioning and metering equipment as well as crime and fire alarm systems and renewable energy technologies. Trainee Electricians will increasingly be able to set out jobs from drawings and specifications and requisition the necessary installation materials.

Electrical safety is an important area of Electricians’ work. On completion of their work the electrical systems must be safe to use. They must adhere to safe working practices without endangering themselves or others. Electricians work on the installation, testing, commissioning and maintenance of low voltage (less than 1000v) electrical and electronic systems.

• Understand and apply the principles, practices and legislation for the termination and connection of conductors, cables and cords in electrical systems

• Understand and apply the practices and procedures for the preparation and installation of wiring systems and electro technical equipment in buildings, structures and the environment, incl. Installation of wiring/cabling for lighting and power systems

• Install electrical system plant (components) such a distribution boards, low voltage main distribution panels and generators

• Install various types of light fittings and power sockets

• Test & inspect electrical systems

• Understand and apply the principles, practices and legislation for diagnosing and correcting electrical faults in electro technical systems and equipment in buildings, structures and the environment

• Understand and apply the electrical principles associated with the design, building, installation and maintenance of electrical equipment and systems

• Oversee and organise the work environment

• Understand and apply the principles of planning and selection for the installation of electro technical equipment and systems in buildings, structures and the environment

• Undertake while under supervision the installation of various types of electrical containment systems such as, PVC & metallic conduits and trunking systems, ladder rack and tray cabling carrying systems

Essential criteria

Ideally candidates will have five GCSEs or equivalent, including Maths, English and a Science subject; or have completed a L2 apprenticeship.

• Full driving licence preferred, willingness and ability to travel; and 

• The right to work permanently and legally in the UK

Desirable criteria

• Completed a L2 Electrical Installation Diploma • Previous experience of working in the construction industry / on a construction site

• Aptitude to understand drawings and measurements

• Aptitude for Maths

• Interest in Construction and the Build Environment

• Team work

• Effective communication

• Interest in working with people from a wide range of backgrounds and experience

• CSCS card

Additional information

This is a Level 3 Apprenticeship position. One day per week the Trainee Installation Technician will attend a course at a college with the aim to pass AM2 Assessment. The course will take up to 4 years to complete.
