Duties

Pre-Lift Checks

  • Inspect all lifting accessories before use — slings, shackles, eyebolts, chains, hooks — check for damage, kinks, cuts, corrosion or deformation and remove any defective equipment from service
  • Verify that all lifting accessories have a valid colour-coded inspection tag and are within their rated working load limit (WLL) for the lift being undertaken
  • Check the load to be lifted — identify any loose items, sharp edges, protrusions or potential for shifting during the lift
  • Confirm the lift has been risk assessed and, where required, a Lift Plan has been completed and signed off
  • Establish clear communication with the crane operator before any lift commences — agree signals (hand signals or radio protocol)
  • Ensure the exclusion zone is established and all personnel are clear of the load path

Slinging the Load

  • Select the correct slinging arrangement for the load — single leg, multi-leg, basket, choker or bridle as appropriate
  • Calculate or confirm the centre of gravity of the load and position lifting points accordingly to ensure the load hangs level
  • Attach slings, shackles or other accessories correctly with no crossed legs, no knots and correct seating in hooks
  • Ensure shackle pins are correctly seated and moused where required
  • Apply tag lines to the load where necessary to control movement and prevent rotation

Record Keeping

  • Report any defective equipment immediately and remove from service — complete defect report
  • Record lift details in the crane/lifting register as required
  • Report any near misses, incidents or unsafe acts to the site manager
