Duties

Lambeth are offering an exciting new opportunity to combine study towards a Chartered Town Planner degree with professional growth through working within a directorate comprising the Development Management, Planning Enforcement, Policy and Place Shaping, Sustainability and the Area Regeneration teams. You will be based in the Civic Centre building in Brixton, one of our many diverse and vibrant town centres.

Your degree apprenticeship will be delivered by London South Bank University (LSBU). Your academic progression will span 5 years and in that time you will you will be stretched and challenged to practically apply your learning working on critical projects in Planning, Regeneration and Sustainability.

This position would ideally suit a recent sixth former, passionate about either geography, planning, sustainability, economics or social sciences. With good ICT, oral and written communication skills, you will have experience of engaging with a range of customers and demonstrate good team work ethics.

The Chartered Town Planner Apprentice will get the opportunity to work within a directorate comprising Development Management, Planning Enforcement, Policy and Place Shaping, Sustainability and the Area Regeneration teams. The apprentice will learn the key functions both administratively and technically to assist across the above service areas which will provide a broad insight into and training for the role of a Chartered Town Planner.

The teams where they will be based during the apprenticeship are involved in a wide range of exciting projects which include:

• validation and assessment of planning applications;

• enforcement of planning control;

• preparation of statutory planning policy documents;

• delivery of the council’s sustainability and climate change agenda;

• conservation of the historic environment;

• infrastructure delivery;

• improving the borough’s town centers;

• transport policy and strategy.

The opportunity will also be there to be involved in the engagement and communications with new technology being procured which engages social media and digital marketing to encourage consultation and community involvement.

The Chartered Town Planner Apprentice role involves working four days a week for the council and one day a week training during term time. The post holder will be required to fulfill all course requirements and all professional learning and development related to the role.

Successful completion of the course will lead to the award of a Bachelor’s degree and postgraduate Diploma in Town Planning, providing eligibility for membership of the RTPI and Chartered status.

Lambeth Residents aged 18-24 will be given priority.

Essential criteria

• Any of: Lambeth schooled; resident or worked in the borough for 5 years or more; attended a Lambeth college within the last 5 years; are receiving or have received Lambeth leaving care services

• Applicants must hold 5 GCSEs A-C including Maths and English, or equivalent (reformed GCSEs grade 4 or above).

• A Level BCC (grade) or; BTEC National Diploma MMM or; Access to HE qualifications with 9 Distinctions and 36 Merits or; Equivalent Level 3 qualifications worth 106 UCAS points or; Level 3 Planning Technician Apprenticeship.
