Description

The post holder will assist the Larkhall Park Gardener and Brockwell Park Gardener as well as wider Lambeth Landscapes teams and other parks staff as directed to maintain and improve the horticulture and biodiversity value of Larkhall Park and Brockwell Park. You will work to a high standard of horticultural practice and contribute delivering our Grounds Maintenance Specification and other associated borough plans such as the Pollinator Action Plan.

Duties

Undertake a broad range of duties using hand tools and mechanical appliances to provide a highquality horticultural service throughout the parks. This will include:

1. Interest in developing identification skills of a wide range of plant and weed species

2. Manual, mechanical and cultural control of invasive weed species

3. Digging, forking, hoeing, raking, weeding, pruning, mowing, strimming, hedge-cutting, edging and mutching.

4. Preparing, planting and maintaining seasonal and perennial planting schemes; maintenance and planting of trees and shrubs, herbaceous plants. Opportunities for planting design depending on experience.

5. Maintenance of turf areas including mowing, aeration, top dressing, seeding and preparing and laying turf; edging paths.

6. Maintenance of naturalised areas including conservation grassland and woodland and other habitats; management of green waste

7. Seasonal clearance of leaves, control of weeds on hard surfaces using a variety of nonchemical techniques; creation of new planted areas and horticultural features.

Essential criteria

A Lambeth Apprentice is expected to bring with them the following skills and a willingness to develop them further:

3) Teamwork and co-operation – the ability to work flexibly in a team and contribute to a supportive work environment.

4) Adaptability and flexibility – apprentices work in fluid, fast-paced and exciting environments. These skills are vital to responding to situations in the workplace.

Able to demonstrate an enthusiasm for and some level of skill and understanding of relevant horticulture tasks and an ability to undertake manual work outdoors in all seasons.

Desirable criteria

Experience of using gardening machinery and working with plants at some level is an advantage

Required qualifications

Qualifications Q1 Maths and English Language: minimum level 1 pass e.g. GCSE grade E (3) or higher or Functional Skills level 1 or equivalent. If you do not have certificates you must commit to achieving level 1 in both maths and English by the end of the taught component of the apprenticeship.

Additional information

This apprenticeship will last for a maximum of 24 months (possibly shorter depending on prior knowledge). This is a Full-Time position split evenly between working at Brockwell Park and Larkhall park with 20% off-the-job time dedicated to college study.
