Duties

As a Support Worker, you will work directly with people in their homes and in the community. You will be expected to support people with a variety of needs, enabling them to live the lives they want.

Duties will include:

  • Building great relationships with people we support and the people important to their lives
  • Promoting choice and participation when supporting people with daily tasks
  • Co-creating opportunities for people to try new things and offering information to support people to make their own choices
  • Offering personalised support by working with people’s strength to build their confidence and overcome obstacles with the aim of achieving their goals
  • Encouraging people to participate in activities that bring them joy and meaning

- Supervising, coaching and training colleagues in person centred support practices and specialist areas of expertise, giving and acting on received feedback on what is going well and what is not going well.

- Allow choice and participation when helping with daily tasks like taking medications, preparing meals, shopping, and engaging in activities they enjoy.

- Encourage people to participate in activities that bring them joy and meaning so they can feel valued and have more drive to learn, grow, and develop.

- Create opportunities for people to try new things, offer alternatives, give information to people to make a choice whilst ensuring risks are managed to keep people safe.

- Offer personalised support by working with people’s strength to build their confidence, to overcome obstacles with the aim to achieve their goals.

- To take on the role of a key worker, responsible for the general welfare of key individuals.

- Support people to develop independent skills, budget planning, accessing educational, voluntary, or paid employment and retaining their tenancy.

- Support people to produce a tailored support plan, with focus on individual’s preferences, maximising and maintaining independence while promoting their rights, autonomy and choices

- Encourage people to speak up and be heard at home, while they're out and about, and when speaking with other professionals so they can feel more confident in the decisions they make.

- Advocate on people's behalf when necessary, and constantly seek ways to give people as much power and control over their lives as possible.

- Ensure all organisational policies and specific agreed ways of working in the service are followed e.g. support plans, medication processes, money is managed effectively, and health and safety practices are followed

Essential criteria

Understanding of keeping people safe and protecting them from any form of abuse.

Understanding the challenges that are likely to be faced by people with mental health or learning disability related issues
