The Security Supervisor is responsible for managing the daily operations of the university's security team to ensure a safe and secure environment for students, staff, faculty, and visitors. This role involves supervising security personnel, monitoring campus activities, and coordinating responses to incidents and emergencies.
The role requires an appropriate level of physical fitness to perform patrols, respond to emergencies, and handle potential physical confrontations and supervisors are required to undertake shift-based work, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
The post holder is required to communicate in a harmonious and professional manner with students, staff and visitors, and ensure the team is delivering service to ‘Fit For Kings’ standards and expectations.
The below points set out the key responsibilities for the role, and whilst these cover the key role requirements, post holders will also be required to undertake any other reasonable management request.
Operational Oversight
1. Supervise and coordinate the activities of campus security officers during assigned shifts, ensuring deployed staff are briefed effectively, to understand responsibilities, priorities and operational threats and risks.
2. Take effective steps to maintain situational awareness, through effective use of available information sources, including but not limited to information from students, staff and visitors, as well as technical security systems.
3. Provide visible leadership on the ground, to support staff and ensure high standards of operational delivery, as well as providing training, induction and support of new or agency staff to ensure they are well-prepared for deployment.
4. Ensure relevant equipment is issued and maintained appropriately, with any defects reported promptly. This includes personal radios, card readers, keys, and any other equipment issued to support security duties.
5. Working closely with the resource team, prepare shift schedules and manage leave requests to maintain optimal staffing levels, to provide optimal security officer cover. Where necessary, deploy / re-deploy staff to duty posts based on operational requirement, and provide effective in-person handover to the on-coming supervisor, ensuring all staffing and operational issues are covered.
6. Take responsibility for ensuring the required professional standards of conduct, dress, appearance and professionalism, are maintained. Where breaches are identified, take effective action to address these, implementing relevant HR policies and procedures, as well as implementing absence management and return to work processes.
Incident Management
7. Take operational command of incidents to resolve issues, supporting the team and providing visible leadership on the ground and / or in the control room, taking personal responsibility for initial investigation of incidents, collation / preservation of evidence, incident reporting, and escalation to managers as appropriate.
8. Maintain awareness of pre-determined responses and be prepared to implement and lead the team when these are activated. This includes but is not limited to emergency evacuation, invacuation and ‘lock-down’ procedure, coordinating the security response with local police and emergency services when necessary.
Team Leadership
9. Provide effective leadership, guidance, and training to your team, and lead by example, by demonstrating high personal standards of conduct, dress, appearance and professionalism.
10. Take responsibility for staff development, working with individuals to identify strengths and weaknesses. Provide advice and encouragement, recommending plans to improve performance, and completing meaningful reviews as part of the PDR process.
11. Take individual responsibility for delivering services in key operational areas, as agreed with the line manager (e.g. lost property, cycle security, KCL security web page etc.), engaging proactively and effectively with local stakeholders to acquire information, provide reassurance and promote positive relationships.
Campus Safety Programs
12. Assist in planning and conducting safety drills (e.g., fire, active shooter, or evacuation) and where appropriate, promote awareness of relevant safety and security policies among students and staff.
Compliance and Reporting
13. Prepare detailed reports for the Security Manager / Head of Security / Deputy Head of Security on campus security related matters and contribute to the development of security strategies.
14. Maintain effective oversight of operational security processes, including Assignment Instructions - undertaking regular audit and inspection to ensure these remain fit-for-purpose and make accurate record this, as required.
15. Ensure adherence to relevant Health and Safety requirements and processes, taking swift and appropriate action to address / report identified issues. Where required, initiate risk assessments and contribute to the development of appropriate mitigation measures.
