Duties

We operate with COVID safety procedures in place and the team are currently working flexibly both at home and in the office. As this role is resident engagement focused there is a requirement to maintain our outreach work in the borough, operating in line with government guidance.

What you’ll do

As the Communication and Outreach Officer, you will research, develop and deliver projects to promote effective recycling and responsible environmental behaviours to communities across the borough of Lambeth. You will be passionate about improving recycling and reducing waste, and keen to use behaviour change theories to deliver impactful campaigns.

You will be responsible for communicating with residents to solve issues and inform them of any changes to their recycling and waste services, as well as delivering face-to-face community engagement activities to achieve project goals. This could include identifying target groups and developing appropriate strategies to deliver key messages, developing and delivering community events, and door-knocking target areas.

● Researching, developing and leading new campaigns and projects to increase recycling and reduce waste

● Delivering outreach work across the borough (working with third parties may be required)

● Creating briefs and managing relationships with design agencies, printers and other third party suppliers to provide effective marketing materials

● Communicating with residents and the council on recycling and waste issues, ensuring that the information provided is of the highest possible standard and conforms to the correct format and style

● Liaising with the operational team on service issues and campaign plans

● Supporting the Digital and PR Officer in the preparation of press releases, website updates, and social media communications

● Conducting internal PR to engage with staff.

Where you’ll work

You will be based in our Lambeth contract within the Education, Communication and Outreach (ECO) team, consisting of three officers, the contract ECO manager and area ECO manager. During Covid-19 flexible home working is permitted, with one to two days a week in the office depending on requirements. The office is the central hub for a diverse workforce who coordinate and deliver essential waste management and street cleansing services across the borough.

Essential criteria

● Proven experience in project planning and management

● Strong communication and presentation skills

● Strong organisational and multitasking skills

● Excellent communications skills with a high degree of attention to detail

● Ability to demonstrate creativity and innovation, especially within communications

● Strong Microsoft Office/Google Suite software skills and highly computer literate

● Strong negotiation skills with the ability to remain calm under pressure


Desirable criteria

● Understanding of communications and marketing processes

● Experience of working in the waste management or environmental sector

● Educated to degree level or equivalent in a relevant field, or significant project management experience

● Experience of engagement and outreach work with school children and the public
